Spotlight About AFA About AFA
At the National Level
The Board of Directors (BOD), the unions highest governing body, consists of all AFA local council presidents. The BOD amends AFAs Constitution and Bylaws, elects national officers, determines the annual budget and oversees all union activities.
All MEC presidents make up the Executive Board, which interprets policy and carries out decisions of the Board of Directors.
The BOD elects and advises the International Officers the international president, vice president and secretary-treasurer who serve full-time for four-year terms and administer union operations.
The Association of Flight Attendants (AFA) is the worlds largest labor union organized by Flight Attendants for Flight Attendants. AFA represents nearly 60,000 Flight Attendants at 23 airlines, serving as a voice for Flight Attendants at their workplace, in the industry, in the media and on Capitol Hill. Simply put, the goal of flight attendants who become part of AFA-CWA is to negotiate better pay, benefits, working conditions and work rules at their airline, and to improve their safety on the job.
At Each Base
All Flight Attendants working for the same airline and assigned to the same base or modified co-terminal form the Local Council.
The president, vice president and secretary of each council, elected by the members of that Local Council to a three-year term, form the Local Executive Council (LEC).
At Each Airline
All local council presidents from the same airline form a Master Executive Council (MEC). The MEC elects a president, vice president and secretary-treasurer for three-year terms, and handles negotiations and other business affecting members at that airline.

President AFA-CWA Council 12 PRESIDENT - Dante Harris
Dante was raised in a union household, and has been mentored in the labor movement most of his life. His passion and motivation to advocate for issues facing working families started long before joining United as a Flight Attendant in 2000.
In the last 11 years, he has gained invaluable experience in many AFA positions including SFO Local Executive Council Secretary, SFO Grievance Chairperson, LAX Grievance Rep, LAX Government Affairs Rep, SFO Communications Chairperson, SFO Reserve Chairperson, and more. He has represented LAX Flight Attendants in more than 80 Grievance Hearings and more than 250 in San Francisco over the years. Dante has also completed many years of union training, seminars, and professional schooling that uniquely qualifies him to lead our local union.
Where there is Unity, You will find Strength!

John has experience on the Safety, Health, and Security Committee and has volunteered for other union projects over the years. His goal is to help unify our co-workers and continue the battle ahead for a contract we deserve.
Most flight attendants know John as an International Purser and though that role along with his union leadership role as AFA Council 12 Representative, he has the passion and the skills necessary to support our elected officers and members through the next phase of our careers.
Darcys dedication is to the Flight Attendants of AFA Council 12. Her leadership skills are best seen in the day to day operations as an International Qualified Purser. In addition, her reputation and experience make her a great addition to the Council 12 Leadership team.

Grievance Grievance Committee
INVESTIGATIONS
If you are contacted by a supervisor for a "meeting" or investigation, make sure you ask:
"Could this meeting lead to discipline up to and including termination?"
If so, you are allowed to have an AFA witness ( read Your Rights as an Employee).
Remember, if unsure, just ask directly if you should bring an AFA Witness.
- You are provided up to 24 hours to obtain a witness (Section 26.F.6 of the Contract).
- A witness takes written notes of the conversations, but is not allowed to speak during questioning. You are also encouraged to take written notes.
Documents or reports related to the investigation must be provided to you at the meeting, so that you can review them before answering any questions.
If you are required to sign a Confidentiality Agreement, this does not prohibit you from speaking to an AFA Representative. This agreement only prohibits you from speaking with other employees about the circumstances of the investigation.
- If you are called in for a Work History Reviews, a witness is not necessary.
The Grievance Committee is responsible for the enforcement of our Contract and the protection against arbitrary and unjust disciplinary actions. Representatives have been trained to handle local grievances and hearings.

Reserve Reserve Committee
The Reserve Committee helps verify the Company's compliance with established rules and procedures regarding reserve assignments. For example, committee members monitor assignments, looking for excessive conversions of CLLRs, as well as trips assigned out of order.
Filling of Premium Positions (sec.9.F.7.c.3)
(3) If no purser qualified Flight Attendant is on board, or for open non-qualified purser positions (i.e. North America narrowbody), the open premium position is filled as follows:
(a) By the most senior Flight Attendant with at least one year of seniority who volunteers to work the position. If no one volunteers, then,
(b) By the most junior reserve with at least one year of seniority. If none is available, then,
(c) By the Flight Attendant who picked up the position through the open flying process, if she/he has at least one year seniority. If not, then,
(d) By the most junior Flight Attendant on board with at least one year of seniority.
(e) If there is no Flight Attendant with more than one year of seniority, then the premium position will be filled by the most senior Flight Attendant on the crew.
Note: The name of the Flight Attendant assigned an open premium position, either voluntarily or not, will appear in the purser position on the FLTLOF (marked by an asterisk, indicating that it was open). If the Flight Attendant was assigned the position involuntarily (through drafting or reassignment), she/he is not considered to have picked up the position through the open flying process.
