To Onboard Service Management Personnel -
Personal Emergency Absences Policy Guidelines (Page 250 of the purple 2005-2010 Agreement):

A personal emergency is an unplanned event, which is impossible to anticipate and would reasonably prevent an employee from reporting to work. When discussing or investigating personal emergency absences to determine if they should be excused, the following should be considered:

  • How much control did the F/A have over the circumstances which gave rise to the absence?
  • Was the absence appropriate to the situation? (i.e., would you or any reasonable person have missed work under the same circumstances?)
  • Could the F/A have made advance arrangements to avoid the absence? (e.g., back-up child care, schedule trade, ANP/PTO/DAT; alternative transportation, etc.)
  • Is it likely that such absences will continue as a result of the F/A's personal situation? Would a leave of absence and/or a referral to EAP be appropriate?

If the absence has been determined to be an excused personal emergency:

  • The absence and the reason for it are recorded in the F/A's Work History.
  • The incident and any reference to it are not included in future counseling, initial discussions or any discipline.
  • Emergency time off due to death in the immediate family (Section 4.T. of the Agreement and Series 15.7.5) is excused and without loss of pay for up to three consecutive days. Such absences are not included in counseling, initial discussions or discipline for dependability.

PLEASE NOTE: Not all DNFs are negative in your work history. If the DNF includes mitigating circumstances, such as an emergency, DIF (death in the family) or accident, make sure the notation in your work history reflects this. You are also able to add any of your own reports referencing the DNF entry to your personnel file at the domicile. Inclusions must be pertinent to the entry.

Death in the Family (DIF)

For questions on DIFs, contact a supervisor through the LAXSW coordinator. See last bullet of previous Contract excerpt (above) for more details. Positive Space (NRPS) travel must be authorized by supervisor. Contact domicile management (Duty Supervisor through the coordinator) if you encounter any problems.

As a reminder, qualifying individuals are set forth per Company Policy. Click SkyNet Death In Family Link HERE for more detailed information from SkyNet (logon required).

California Highway Patrol - Records Department

If an accident or out of the ordinary incident on a freeway resulted in a late check-in or DNF, contact the California Highway Patrol Records Department for a public records report on the incident. See specifics below.

The report you're provided with can be submitted to a Performance Supervisor for filing in your work history. F/As have effectively utilized these public records to avoid negative Dependability issues being placed into their Work History.

Also, if you reside outside California, use an Internet search engine to locate the Highway Patrol Records offices in your respective county or state.

Note: It may take up to 2 weeks following incident for CHP records to be available. Call 1-800-TELL-CHP for non-emergency related inquiries and contact number information not included on this page. You may also visit the CHP Offices Online Directory.
