LAX Negotiations Power & Action Seminar (Strike Preparation Meeting)

AFA LAX Council 12 hosts Strike Preparation Meeting at LAX; Flight Attendants continue to build strength through involvement, education & awareness

[11.13.09] -- We moved from the initial phase (Direct Negotiations) of our Contract Campaign to Phase II (Federal Mediation) a few months ago (in August 2009). Phase II dictates the escalation of actions and activities that require increased participation by our Flight Attendant Negotiations Network (FANN) in the negotiating process. Phase II will tap into the energy, inventiveness, intelligence and collective power of our Flight Attendant community.

An important component of Negotiating strategy is to be prepared in the event our negotiations conclude in "self help" (the terminology used for the period after the 30-day "cooling-off" period is reached). This seminar is a condensed and adapted version of the training provided to our Local Council Officers & Committee Members in the spring of this year. Our Power & Action Seminar: Strike Preparedness Training is a furthering of our Negotiations strategy adopted in October 2007.

The seminar reviewed non-economic tactics that can be used PRIOR to the expiration of a 30-day cooling-off period, in addition to preparing for Strike activities. The training covered innovative twists on common tactics such as informational picketing, leafleting, rallies, letter/email campaigns and other similar activities, as well as the fundamentals of being "strike prepared." Ongoing Strike preparedness is just part of our larger Contract Campaign. The Railway Labor Act (RLA) prohibits us from taking concerted actions aimed at inflicting economic harm on United, such as a Strike or other forms of work action until AFTER the 30-day cooling-off period.

Our Contract Campaign is a unique, bold and ambitious undertaking. The goals we've outlined are achievable, reasonable and affordable by United Airlines. As you know, never before, have we or any other Union begun negotiations preparations so far in advance and we're executing against those goals and our strategic plan with precision and preparedness. OUR COMPREHENSIVE CONTRACT CAMPAIGN WILL ESCALATE IN THE DAYS & WEEKS AHEAD. It will take continued discipline and spirited action by ALL 16,000 of us to attain our collective goals.
