Chile Quake Prompts Tsunami Advisory
[2/27/10] -- 1538 PT -- Pacific Tsunami Warning Center Cancels Tsunami Warning for the Hawaiian Islands
[February 27, 2010] -- Updated 1030 PT -- Tsunami Warning in effect for all Hawaiian Islands and coastal areas across the Pacific. Currently, all airports where United operates remain open. Delays to/from Hawaiian Islands have placed crew scheduling in "Drafting" situation at LAX and SFO (due to legalities of crews on Island turn trips). See Contract Section 9.I.7 for Drafting parameters. Phone lines have been jammed, affecting voice calls; text messaging and emails remain unaffected.
Our AFA MEC Safety, Health & Security Committee & AFA MEC Hotel Committee have been in contact with United and LAX AFA President Darren Shiroma. Update from United management indicates that all layover crews have been accounted for and are following evacuation instructions per local hotel staff. Crewmembers on layover should continue to follow instructions provided by hotel staff. United Operations or Crew Scheduling should be contacting crewmembers regarding outbound (from Hawai'i to U.S. Mainland).
KOA -- 1122 PT Update: Temporary relocation for crewmembers in KOA has been issued, crew will be moved to inland location for several hours until the threat has passed.
HNL -- 1230 PT Update: Waikiki beaches being cleared by authorities; all Waikiki hotel guests being evacuated to third floor (or higher) until the threat has passed.
Updates and/or reports regarding affected crews should be sent to afalax@unitedafa.org.

Updates also will be posted on our MEC site >>
