Kimberly Burckhalter

Vice President of AFA-CWA Council 12 - LAX

Kimberly Burckhalter has been a proud United Airlines Flight Attendant and member of AFA-CWA for more than 20 years. She serves our Union and family of Flight Attendants, striving for changes that make our jobs safer, more fulfilling, and something that we all can continue to be proud of.  She believes that everything comes down to the people serving others on the “front lines”; those that are DIRECTLY related to the decisions made often without our input and insight.

Her record and years of service as a Union rep show that she does not shy away from sacrificing her time and dedication to help represent our Union and all of our valued members.

In addition to serving as the Vice-President & AFA Grievance Committee Chairperson for Local Executive Council 12, Kimberly also served in the Master Executive Council Office in various capacities.  She is excited to utilize her years of experience and her unending efforts to ensure the language in our contract is never misinterpreted or overlooked. She is a voice for those that are unable to make the “noise” necessary to bring the attention to the issues important to all us.

Sharlene Kirk

Secretary, AFA-CWA Council 12 - LAX

My name is Sharlene Kirk and I started my career as a Flight Attendant more than 31 years ago.  I had always supported the union in whatever way I could, be it union picketing for flight attendants or other union work groups, campaigning for state governors, representatives and senators, or informational rallies.  In September of 2001, a colleague suggested I join the schedule committee.  I liked puzzles and I liked the idea of helping my fellow flight attendants by building lines with more consistency.  It was very challenging back then and is still so because of all the changes we are going through.  In 2003 I became the schedule chair and I continue to hold this position today.

I have also been a council rep in LAX for one term.  I then ran for MEC Central Scheduling Committee in Chicago and won.  I remained on  CSC for 6 1/2 years.  During my tenure, I advocated for better quality of life for all Flight Attendants and especially for LAX.  I still want to see more growth in our Council.  We are the new United and I know I can help LAX | SAN | SEA get ready for our new beginnings.

Mary Garton

Council Representative

I have been a Flight Attendant for twenty- five years. I have been based all over the world in my time here and have now come full circle home to SANSW (which is now part of LAX) where I grew up. I am also a mother of twin elementary school aged girls.

I have been very fortunate to serve on a vast array of AFA Committees from the local level to the International level. My AFA volunteer experience began with the local Reserve Committee in ORD in the year 2000. I then went on to serve as the first MEC Membership Engagement Chairperson, then as the MEC Vice-Chairperson for Communications and for Government Affairs respectively. I currently serve as a member of the Legislative Policy Committee for AFA’s Board of Directors.

Advocating for our Membership and working to build grassroots action through each of these roles has taught me powerful lessons about the power of our collective voice.  The knowledge I have gained through the work of each of these committees has supplemented my education to provide me the foundation needed to effectively step into the role of Council Representative.

In Solidarity,

Mary Garton

Anthony King

Council Representative

My name Is Anthony King, a newly transfer to the SANSW satellite base.  For the last 20 years, I was based at our London domicile. During that time, it allowed me the opportunities to live in France and England which was amazing.

For the last seven years, I served as the President for AFA-CWA Council 7 in London, a position that was both challenging and rewarding. I had set some personal goals, while President of that Council, which I feel was successful with its results.  The goal was to engage the base to be more involved with understanding their contract, advocating for resolution when contractual or operational issues arouse and to increase those volunteering for their Union at the Council. I was excited that our team was successful in all areas.  It was an honor to be of service to such a diverse and amazing group of Union brothers and sisters.  They will always hold a place in my heart.

Durning my  tenure, a large portion of the focus  were on issues that were more general to the Council 7 membership. We suffered some unique challenges specific to its location that differs from our colleagues stateside.  The Council had an extensive and exhausting relationship with our Payroll Department. There were several ongoing issues, but together we were able to get it sorted and put back on track.    Another goal met was building up our committee volunteers  to which I will always be thankful.  They set some high standards, great examples and remained passionate and available for not only our Council 7 members but many out of base members.  I was pleased with our successes as a group and want to continue my work.

Fast forward to September 2019,  I find myself back in San Diego.  Because of tax implications and capital gains issues, the UK was not financially viable which facilitated my move to San Diego.  I am currently in the process of selling our flat and securing the paperwork for my husband.  We will be also bring our cat, Captain and our long-haired Dachshund, Marshall to our new surroundings.  I am sure they will be big hits in the neighborhood with their British accents!!!

I was approached by Dante about running for a Council Representative position to better aid our colleagues in our San Diego base.  Having sat next to Dante for seven years at the MEC table, it seemed odd that he would be my ‘boss’ but after a few conversations,  I agreed.  I have always been active with our Union and wanted to remain active.  I started when I transferred to LA in 1986 where I was a Reserve Member.    Since I served seven years of straight RSV and seven more on AB rotation, I have a soft spot for those serving RSV capacity.  I continued my volunteer work as an Info Rep, Membership Engagement and eventually the LECP position.  As a President for a small International Council, I was well educated in the various MEC Committees but have a passion for Line Building, EAP and Government Affairs.

I know that San Diego is going to be an amazing base where I have already met such dynamic people and look forward to meeting more.

Anthony King

Timothy Trueman

Council Representative of AFA-CWA Council 12 - LAX

Timothy has been a flight attendant for over 29 years. His experience began with legacy Continental, volunteering for Reserve Scheduling rules 27 years ago. There was no contract on the property and reserve flight attendants were being scheduled and flown under fuzzy parameters. He was then appointed as a one man reserve committee reporting back to the main union office some of the abuses reserve FA’s were receiving. Within a year,  he was appointed Grievance Committee Chair for their small LAX flight attendant base. For nearly eight years, he filed and processed grievances at the first and second step of the grievance procedure, conducted informational meetings for the flight attendants, attended executive council meetings, and assisted in merging their tiny independent union with the IAMAW.

From producing and writing newsletters, to conducting meetings, and processing grievances, Timothy has been front and center assisting FA’s on a personal basis at the domicile level for much of his career. He has always been a union activist and supporter of union activities on behalf of flight attendants. He believes that by speaking with one voice while acting in concert, we have power. Education of all members, especially our newer members, is key for AFA and its future. Timothy believes that having a diverse group of representatives for this Local Executive Council with varying seniority, from different pre-merger airlines with different levels of experience, will help build a council that is representative of all flight attendants domiciled at LAX.

Timothy's experience will provide context from his pre-merger background and provide understanding with various sections of our new contract which emanated from the legacy Continental contract. He looks forward to working with a great team of United Flight Attendants, and believes that with an attitude of “roll up our sleeves let’s get the work done,” we have the ability to lead our council forward to make all United Flight Attendants at LAX proud.
